In May 1975, some of Vietnamese refugees came to Ottawa and gathered together at Christ Roi church. Vietnamese refugees came and located in Ottawa-Hull region more and more. At that time, Father Jacques Faucher was a pastor of Christ Roi church and he allowed Vietnamese Catholic community invite Father Nhan Tu Tran to celebrate masses in Vietnamese every three or four months in many years. Father Canh Quang Vu devotedly helped Vietnamese Catholic community many things in that difficult time.

Father Canh Quang Vu received an order from Ottawa Archbishop on Feb 02, 1988 and he was choosen as a chaplain for the Vietnamese Catholic community. The Vietnamese Catholic community was officially founded in Archdiocese of Ottawa from that time and masses were celebrated every Sunday at Christ-Roi church.

Vietnamese Catholic population have been increased more and more after preserving traditional Vietnamese culture and developing the friendship of Christ in many years. Ottawa Archibishop gave St Jeanne D’Arc church to Vietnamese Catholic community and promoted Vietnamese Catholic community become Our Lady of Lavang Parish.

The last mass of Vietnamese Catholic community at Christ-Roi church was celebrated at 11:00AM on May 25, 2001, and the first mass at new church was celebrated on June 1, 2001. Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais celebrated Thanks mass and inaugurated Our Lady of Lavang Parish at 11:00AM on June 24, 2001, with participation of a lot of Vietnamese Catholics in Ottawa region. Many honourable guests came to share the happiness with Vietnamese Catholics in Ottawa region.
